Trimpin’s Musical Sculptures

Trimpin – Seattle Based sound artist, kinetic sculptor, musician, and composer

I was first treated to Trimpin’s musical sculptures in Seattle at the Frye Art Museum. Imagine the sight and sound of dozens of colourful hanging wooden clogs being hammered by mallets. The musical score computer programmed.

Well as part of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, Trimpin’s work Sheng High was featured at BOB’s temporary gallery space in Chinatown. This work involved a series of large hanging bamboo pieces outfitted with reeds. They were systematically lowered into baths of water thereby pushing air through the reeds to produce a sound. The musical score read by laser. A wonderful combination of sight and sound.
