Photo Etching (6-7/8″ x 9″)

The printmaking method is intaglio. This is where the ink forming the design is printed from the recessed areas of the matrix. Photo-etching with solar plates involves printing an image on a transparency, exposing a light sensitive copper plate, and developing the plate.

Oppenheimer Park’s New Look

August 6th, 2010

This past weekend I had the pleasure of enjoying two solid days of the Powell Street Festival in it’s 34th year at Oppenheimer Park. The park was renovated in 2009 and now sports a magical play area for kids and big kids like me. It also has lots of welcoming gathering areas including benches, seatwall, patio spaces, horseshoe pitch, basketball court, and activity center.

Back to the playground that stole my heart…

Elements include:

Drive By Press Visits Malaspina Printmakers

June 6th, 2010

Drive By Press brings printmaking to the people. On Friday May 21, 2010 they visited Malaspina Printmakers for their last and only Canadian stop on their 1.5 year tour. The wheels for this latest tour was a Honda Element housing their portable press and over 3000 prints they’ve collected from artists along the way. They demonstrated relief printmaking. The Malaspina Studio was transformed into a Gallery exhibiting works from contemporary North American Printmakers. It was a feast for the senses.

During each stop DBP collects prints from area artists, amassing the largest collection of contemporary prints from across the country!

“Spring has sprung,

The Grass has riz,

I wonder where the boidies is?

Some say the boid is on the wing,

But that’s absoid!

The wing is on the bird!”

–Ogden Nash

This poem is a childhood favourite. My dad recites it the best.

Carnival celebrations in Switzerland have just come to an end. I just love the creative costumes, fun makeup and marching bands.  I haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing this in person yet. I’m living the moment vicariously through the wondeful word of Flickr. I would love to be there for this one year. Basel is renowned for its Fasnacht celebrations.

Trimpin’s Musical Sculptures

February 26th, 2010

Trimpin – Seattle Based sound artist, kinetic sculptor, musician, and composer

I was first treated to Trimpin’s musical sculptures in Seattle at the Frye Art Museum. Imagine the sight and sound of dozens of colourful hanging wooden clogs being hammered by mallets. The musical score computer programmed.

Well as part of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, Trimpin’s work Sheng High was featured at BOB’s temporary gallery space in Chinatown. This work involved a series of large hanging bamboo pieces outfitted with reeds. They were systematically lowered into baths of water thereby pushing air through the reeds to produce a sound. The musical score read by laser. A wonderful combination of sight and sound.

Vectorial Elevation Vancouver Interactive Light Show

February 24th, 2010

Nadia's Light Show February 24, 2010

With 20 robotic searchlights at your disposal why not design your own light show/sculpture? This interactive public art is part of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad.

The lights are located on either side of English Bay with 10 in Vanier Park and 10 in Sunset Beach. Choose which lights to use, target their location and height in the sky, and choose a style (pyramid, parallel, or grid).  Google Earth  is there to help you visualize your creation. Once your design has been broadcast brightly across the night sky, you will receive your own personal webpage with photos of the real thing. You can even dedicate your show to someone.

Here’s a peak at my personal light shown today at ~7:30 pm.

Give it a try or watch the light show live.

At the downtown Vancouver Holt Renfrew Fashion meets Sport in this wonderful winter-scape inspired by the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.

Vancouver Holt Renfrew Downhill Skier

Details I love:

  • dynamic backdrop which features peaked mountains with a ski jump/run leading down to a miniature version of downtown Vancouver
  • a beautiful mannequin adorned with silvery wings wearing an orange and pink floaty chiffon gown, perfect for aerial skiing or flying over the city
  • hot pink helmet, you know… because safety comes first

Vancouver Holt Renfrew Speed Skaters

Vancouver Holt Renfrew Speed Skaters 2

Details I love:

  • diamonds are a girls best friend – bejewelled helmets
  • the speed-skater pose
  • mannequin thighs lack the typical muscles for speed skating
  • the mirror like ice rink

Vancouver Holt Renfrew Bobsleigh

Details I love:

  • Striking a pose – I imagine this as the victory scene where team Pink of the women’s bobsled strike a pose and show off their wears
  • once again hot pink helmets adorned with diamonds – you can’t go wrong with this combination
  • black ribbons/bows around their necks are medal-esque
  • pink cocktail dress for the runner. They’re not good pumps unless they withstand the running test.
